Veteran Nollywood actor Pete Edochie is unarguably one of the best actors Nigeria has ever produced, and the septuagenarian is a fulfilled actor in every sense of the word.
The multi-talented actor is currently trending on Twitter, and one cannot help but check why Pete is trending.
There are many things that usually come to people’s mind when a personality is trending, one of which is the demise of such person, especially when it’s been long you heard about them.
So when Pete started trending today, I prayed he shouldn’t be about death but something else. Then I realised that the veteran actor was trending because of a statement credited to his son Yul Edochie.
Yul had said when he was in junior secondary school 2, he told his father that he didn’t want to continue his education, asking him to open an electrical shop for him.
According to Yul who is also an actor, his father said “okay” to his request and invited him to his room, locked the door and pulled out his belt.
Yul recounted: “He gave me a beating that reset my brain to factory setting. Look at me today. Thank you Dad!”
This triggered reactions on social media, with virtually everyone marvelling at the audacity Yul had to make such request of his father.
Some even jokingly said they wouldn’t have the effrontery to change the channel if Pete was on TV, while others said they wouldn’t summon the courage to speak where the veteran actor was speaking.
The reactions Yul’s statement triggered on social media shouldn’t be surprising because of his father’s personality.
Pete is a disciplinarian both in movies and in real life; and the characters he usually portrays on TV have over the years endeared him to a lot of Nollywood lovers in Nigeria and abroad.
The veteran actor, who is respected both in Nigeria and outside the country, has featured in over 300 movies and his achievement in the movie industry will definitely outlive him.
There are some points to be taken home in the account Yul gave about his childhood, one of which is that the disciplinarian character Pete is known to portray in several of his movies is reflected in the man his son has grown up to be.
Yul is a successful actor too, and this wouldn’t have been possible without his father‘s input and discipline. If Pete wasn’t a disciplinarian who understood the importance of education, Yul may not be where he is today.
To Nigerians, Pete is a disciplinarian, a successful actor, a man who understands how important education is, an unapologetic custodian of Nigerian culture – believe me – they are right about who he is.
